At the BOCC meeting on Tuesday, the Board of County Commissioners voted to authorize the addition of ballot questions that, if approved by a majority of Rio Blanco County registered voters, would establish term limitations on each individual office including Assessor, Clerk and Recorder, County Commissioner, Coroner, Sheriff, and Treasurer. Each office will be listed separately on the ballot in November. If passed by the voters, the limit would be two consecutive terms of office, beginning on or after January 1, 2021. Currently there are no term limitations.
The resolution passed 2-1, with Commissioner Rector voting against. "I generally support term limits, however it's hard in these rural communities. We have a hard enough time filling those positions sometimes," Commissioner Rector commented regarding his nay vote.
Commissioners Woodruff and Moyer both voted in favor of the resolution. Commissioner Moyer stated, “It’s been over 25 years since Rio Blanco County voters have been asked if they want term limits for county elected officials. Enough time has passed that in my opinion it seems justified to ask voters again what they want.”
